Keep our School Kids Safe

Make sure your child is road safe when travelling to school.

Keep our School Kids Safe

Did you know that children can overestimate their own abilities and are unable to judge speed and distance?

Parents and caregivers need to take special care and follow simple steps to ensure child road safety:

  • Teach children safe traffic behaviour and set a good example.
  • Check regularly to ensure that children remember and follow safety procedures.
  • Plan safe walking and cycling routes with children. Walk the route to school with your child to find the best places to cross the street.
  • Accompany your child on their school journey until you are confident they have developed the skills necessary to identify the various risks.
  • Enquire about road safety education programmes at school and reinforce what the schools are teaching.

Tips to Ensure Safe Scholar Transport:

  • Parents must ensure that the transport used is safe and reliable and that the driver has the relevant records and authorization.

Walking to School:

If your child walks to school, make sure they:

  • Always walk on the sidewalk or footpath; if there is no sidewalk, walk facing oncoming traffic.
  • Look left, right and left again before crossing the street.
  • Remove headphones when crossing the street.
  • Cross the street at corners using traffic signals and pedestrian crossings.

Cycling to School:

If your child cycles to school, make sure they:

  • Wear a helmet that fits properly.
  • Never ride with headphones.
  • Ride with traffic, not against it.
  • Obey the traffic signs and signals.

Tips for Drivers:

  • Slow down in school zones and watch for children crossing the street.
  • Be aware of approaching school kids before backing-up, especially small children.
  • Children are the least predictable pedestrians and the most difficult to see. Take extra care to look out for children not only in school zones, but also in residential areas, playgrounds and parks.
