Latest Crash Witness CCTV Footage Released / 24 September 2012

The latest round of Crash Witness CCTV footage (Crash Witness 4) can now be viewed on the Safely Home Website. The footage is the latest instalment of an on-going campaign to educate the public on the violence behind crashes caused by irresponsible and reckless road use.

Crash Witness was initially launched last year, and the footage has received more than 400,000 views online. The videos illustrate the real and horrific effects of speed, drink driving, irresponsible road use by pedestrians and not wearing a seatbelt have on our roads.

The videos come from CCTV cameras located across the province and are not for sensitive viewers, or viewers under the age of 18. They can be accessed on Safely Home’s website, www.safelyhome.westerncape.gov.za

“The hundreds of comments we received about Crash Witness have helped shape road safety policy, including recent proposals for new provincial regulations regarding child safety, speed limits and scholar transport. We simply cannot ignore the very serious message conveyed by these videos. Turning a blind eye to the dangers of reckless and irresponsible road use will invariably mean that more and more lives are lost on our roads on a daily basis,” said Minister Carlisle.

Safely Home was started in 2009, when the death rate on the Province’s roads was at its high watermark, 1 739 killed in 2008. Since then, the death toll has dropped 29.2%, all the way down to 1 231 over the last 12 months. Speed and drink driving remain the main cause of the carnage on our roads.
