This weekend we are expecting the first weekend of excessive traffic in both directions, towards and leaving the Western Cape.
I joined Provincial Traffic Officers during the province’s integrated roadblocks on the N7 yesterday and on the N1 today to ensure our roads are safe during this busy period.
We unfortunately cannot predict what will happen on the roads but we have put in place detailed operations across the province until school returns.
I urge motorists to rest after every 2 hours or 200km travelled. Make sure your vehicle is in a roadworthy condition before you leave your destination. It is the responsibility of the drivers that all passengers including the drivers themselves are buckled up.
Plan your travel so that there is no rush to get to your destination. Please be patient on the road and be cognisant of other road users including pedestrians, motor-cyclists and others.
At the same time we are concerned as government about the increase in infections. I urge all drivers and passenger to always follow the Covid-19 golden rules of hygiene to keep safe and avoid the 3 Cs – close contact, close spaces and crowded places. Everyone using public transport must please wear their face masks and ensure there is good ventilation at all times.
Let us all comply with the rules of the road so that all arrive alive.
I wish everyone a safe return home.
