Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula extended Direction 6 of the Transport Directions to 31 March 2022. This grace period covered all documents which expired in the period of 26 March 2020 to 31 August 2021. A further extension expiring today was granted. I thank Minister Mbalula for heeding our call for the extension.
Of the 397 631 licences from the Western Cape that should have been renewed from August 2021, 226 404 have been renewed leaving 171 227 to be renewed. This means 57% motorists have renewed their licences for the period under review.
It is important to note that the age groups 18 - 25 years, 50 – 60 years and above 60 years have high percentages of outstanding renewals in the Western Cape.
The Department has arranged with the RTMC to distribute reminder sms messages to licence holders whose licences have expired. We hope all the drivers make use of the remaining few hours to renew their driving licences.
I thank all those centres and staff that worked extended hours and weekends to provide more opportunities to licence holders to renew. We have been told all systems are online and there will be no further extension after today.
I also thank all drivers who have done their duty and fulfilled their responsibility and renewed their licences.
