Results of Safely Home Weekend Operations / 5 December 2011

Media Statement by Dan Plato, Minister of Community Safety

As we are approaching another festive season we are very aware that with increased traffic on our roads comes the increased risk of fatalities and injuries. Last week, we launched an integrated Safely Home Road Safety Plan for the festive season with all programmes and initiatives in place to bolster resources to increase safety and combat reckless behaviour on our roads.

The weekend's 24 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the province saw 27 drivers arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after a total of 1 038 were screened for being under suspicion of the offence. The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Laingsburg at 1.54 mg/1 000 ml.

A total of 2 329 vehicles were stopped at roadblocks.

Approximately 241 speeding offences were recorded and a total of 326 fines were issued. The highest speed of 175 km/h in a 120 km/h zone was recorded on the N1 near Worcester.

Three men were arrested in three separate cases over the weekend for the illegal possession of dagga.

On the road between Clanwilliam and Lambertsbay a man lost his life when he lost control of his truck and it overturned. Another fatality was recorded when a light delivery vehicle overturned near Franskraal.
