Media Statement by Dan Plato, Minister of Community Safety
This weekend's integrated law enforcement operations led to the arrest of 14 drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol. Safely Home alcohol blitz roadblocks by Provincial Traffic, SAPS and Municipal Traffic saw a total of 3 408 vehicles stopped and 1 496 drivers screened for being under suspicion of driving drunk.
The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded on the N2 in Swellendam at 0.85 mg/1 000 ml. A total of 425 fines were issued for traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness. Zero fatalities were recorded on the Western Cape's roads during these operations.
It is clear that over the festive season we have seen a change in driver behaviour, with fewer fatalities on our roads and more people choosing to use taxi services after a night out on the weekend.
I would like to encourage the public to continue being aware of the dangers of drunk driving and ensure that they don't put themselves in a situation that could wreck not only their own lives, but those around them too. Traffic violations can be reported to the 24-hour control room on 021 812 4581.
