Last week, 64 people were arrested by Western Cape Provincial Traffic officers on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. During the same period, 15 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in our province.

Our Provincial Traffic Services deliver consistent results in the mission to improve road safety and save lives on our roads. The message is clear, there are consequences for unsafe, illegal, or irresponsible behaviour.

Even small amounts of alcohol can affect your judgement. Never drink and drive. If you plan to drink, find a safer way to get home. This applies to pedestrians too. Don’t walk under the influence along any road. Please find a safer way to get home.

Between 8 and 14 April 2024, Western Cape Provincial Traffic Officers conducted 262 integrated roadblocks, vehicle check points and speed control operations; and stopped and checked 28 905 vehicles across the Western Cape.

A total of 7 205 fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness. Thirteen vehicles were impounded and 152 were discontinued for being unroadworthy.

A total of 246 speeding offences were recorded, with the following highest speeds:
• 174km/h in a 120km/h zone
• 139km/h in a 100km/h zone
• 124Km/h in an 80km/h zone
• 130km/h in a 60km/h zone

A total of 93 arrests were made for the following offences:
• 64 x driving under the influence of alcohol
• 4 x speeding
• 2 x reckless and negligent driving
• 4 x goods overloading
• 10 x possession of fraudulent documentation
• 2 x undocumented persons
• 2 x inducing any authorised officer or peace officer to act in conflict with his/her duty
• 1 x failing to furnish information
• 1 x threatening or suggesting the use of violence against a traffic officer
• 1 x failing to comply with a lawful order from an authorised officer
• 1 x obstructing or hindering an authorised officer in the execution of his or her duty
• 1 x crimen injuria

A total of 24 crashes and 24 fatalities were recorded, including:
• 6 x drivers
• 1 x motorcyclist
• 2 x passengers
• 15 x pedestrians
